Alt Bridge Secondary Support Centre Wins Schools' Turner Prize 2007

The Politics of Place: Tate Liverpool Schools' Turner Prize is the fifth annual schools' exhibition at Tate Liverpool. The exhibition took place in the first floor Education Studio, from 9th January - 12th January, 2008, with a Private View and announcement of the winner on Tuesday 8th January.

The exhibition presented works of art inspired by the Turner Prize 07 exhibition at Tate Liverpool. All the artists whose work was exhibited were pupils from primary and secondary schools in the UK.

Liverpool animation and special effects company: Jojopops worked with Alt Bridge Secondary Support Centre to put together the winning submission in the form of a video installation. The piece was titled "What's your dream?" and was phased as a question to encourage interaction between the viewer and the exhibit.

The film reflected the children's response to their viewing of the 2007 Turner Prize and showed the politics of the school playground being turned on its head when the figure of authority was turned into the victim of the newly balanced turn of events. The children used fancy dress as a device to show the contrast between reality and their dream scenario. The installation was provided as a video loop to reflect the ongoing battle between reality and fantasy with no clear cut beginning or end. The piece was voted as the winner by the judges at the Liverpool Tate against a host of other schools. The announcement was made by Met Quarter who kindly provided the winner with a cheque for £100.

Ian Chisnall and Judith Winters from Alt Bridge said:

"This was a thrilling result for the pupils, parents and staff of Alt Bridge and proves what can be done when we all work together. The challenges and inspiration of the Turner Prize at Tate Liverpool met with a very positive response from the pupils and a determination to create a film with meaning not just for them but for all pupils who have experienced difficulties coping with life in the school playground".
